Painting Day

The greatest sign of a success for a teacher…is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’— Maria Montessori

As a homeschool mom with four children, I try often to involve my children in everything I do.  I find this to not only help to strengthen our family bonds but it also opens the world to them as their classroom.  This is exactly what happened today when I told them that we needed to spend several days painting the studio before the floors would be installed.  Everyone, with the exception of the 20 month old, grabbed a paint brush or roller and got busy with the arduous task of painting the ceiling.  No one complained but worked diligently applying two coats of white ceiling paint to the ceiling that stood 10 feet above us.

At the end of the day, we were all covered with paint and  our backs and shoulders where sore from using muscles we don’t normally use.   Even the baby managed to get some paint on her although she remained in her playpen while we worked.  I think it happened when one of the kids picked her up when we took a lunch break.

Overall, I would not have traded this day for anything.  To watch my children selflessly work really blessed me as a mother.
