After attending my son’s college graduation on May 20, 2012 and seeing the pictures that were taken that day I was so proud of my son, but not proud of myself and the weight that I gained over the past few years. On May 22, 2012 I saw a sign for Shake It Fitness Studio and decided to give it a try. I met Pam Andrews that day and participated in her Zumba class. Not only did I have fun, but Pam and everyone in the class were so supportive. They made me feel so welcome and part of their family. I decided to take Pam’s PiYo class, and I remember saying to her, “I can’t believe how out of shape I am”. Pam’s response to me was, “it doesn’t matter how out of shape you are, you are here now and doing something about it, it’s never to late to get healthy”.  I can’t tell you how much those words meant to me and gave me the courage and motivation to keep coming to class. Today is November 22, 2012 and my six month anniversary since I started my weight loss journey, I am proud to say I have lost 46 pounds, and I haven’t felt this good in twenty years. I look at this picture taken the summer of 2008 and think I look pregnant even though I hadn’t been in six years.  Maintaining a healthy weight has always been a struggle for me.  My family has a history of high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.  So I knew that I had to make different choices.  I got serious about my health when my doctor told me that my total cholesterol was 203 mg/dl.  How did this happen?  What would I now do differently?  What would happen to my young children if something happened to me?

I had tried a Zumba class and it was “love at first shake.”  I was moving in ways I hadn’t in years and because I didn’t feel like I was working out, it was really easy to stick with it.  From there, I made radical changes to my eating habits (I eat healthy foods, but I was eating a lot of healthy foods–you know too much of a good thing can even be a bad thing.)  Within months I really started to see my body go through a radical transformation.  My mid-section was getting more tone, not bad for a 40-something year old lady!   About a year later, I became a licensed Zumba fitness instructor and continued on my path to helping others achieve their fitness goals.  For over four years, I’ve been able to maintain a healthy weight and lower my cholesterol to 170 mg/dl.
