KX Pilates is the toning full body workout that will whip you into shape

You know that bittersweet feeling after leg day when you literally find yourself hobbling around like a 90-year-old because you’re just so sore? But it’s a good sore because you know you’ve really worked those muscles hard? Now take that feeling, place it all over your body and imagine waking up like this every time after taking a class at KX Pilates Surry Hills.

Of course there are millions of other studios offering reformer Pilates classes, so why does the KX name continue to dominate the field?

Aaron Smith, founder of KX Pilates, puts it simply: “The KX Pilates method is a more intense workout than traditional reformer classes as the variety of dynamic moves has been increased to get your heart racing.

Basically, there is “more exercise flow and less rest between exercises.”

By combining both cardio and endurance, what you get in return for your hard work is increased endurance, flexibility, coordination and incredible muscle definition (without turning you into The Rock). To paint a better picture, it’s the system responsible for Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Anniston’s toned and lean physique, and Miley Cyrus’ hardcore abs. Need I say more?

In fact, Smith says after each class you’ll feel stronger than when you walked in.

The Surry Hills studio offers Beginner and Intermediate classes depending on your fitness levels, but all trainers do give Intermediate options in the Beginner classes as well.

Each 50-minute class is structured in a way that your muscles are warmed up and isolated, then fatigued, and then finally stretched using the reformer, a variety of weights (think dumbbells, weighted poles) and a Pilates ring. Doing so means you’re making the most out of every muscle fibre in a short, but sensible, amount of time.

And if you ever feel uncoordinated and awkward doing some of the exercise (trust me, there will be many times), there’s never a moment where the qualified trainers aren’t willing to help.

There are various other KX locations around Australia, however the friendly feel-good vibe at the Surry Hills location is what keeps people coming back for more. Well that and the muscle-definition you’ve always dreamed of having.

THE b+s BREAKDOWN:

Come for the… most intense muscle-toning workout. I can’t stress this enough: you’re going to discover muscles you never knew you had.

Leave with… extremely wobbly legs, burning glutes, a tight core and gunning arms – without dripping head-to-toe in sweat. Oh, and stunning posture.

Be sure to bring with you… determination. The trainers will kindly motivate and push you to your limits, but only you get to decide how much rest you really need between the sets.

Water, towels and hair ties (for those forgetful days) are also provided.

The little things: For those of you who are concerned about exactly how clean the machines are, everyone is asked to kindly wipe down their machines with the antibacterial wipes provided at the end of each class.

There’s also showers, hairdryers, clean bath towels and deodorant available in the change rooms.

Perfect for: The person who hardly exercises and doesn’t know where to start, to the serious fitness buff. Men, just an FYI – KX is definitely not just for women.

Difficulty factor: 8/10. Look, it really depends on how hard you want to push yourself. There are different weights available and the trainers give you spring options of how difficult you want your reformer to be for each exercise. But you’re never going to leave a class unsatisfied because you really should be pushing yourself to go that extra a mile further in each class, regardless of your fitness level. I pushed myself as hard as I could in my first class, and yep, I couldn’t walk down the stairs afterwards.

Cost: Casual classes are $30. Monthly memberships start from 8 classes for $168 and yearly packages from 5 classes for $140. First-timers can also take advantage of the Introductory offer of 5 classes for $50, which lasts for 14 days.
