How to reverse your calorie blowout these holidays


Have you indulged in a little too much over the festive season? Not to worry, PT Ben Lucas shares his top four tips to you get back on track to your healthiest-self.

During the Christmas festivities, we typically consume food that we wouldn’t usually.

If your training regime has also fallen to the wayside, you may start to feel a little less like yourself and eager to re-establish equilibrium. Whilst it’s important to indulge from time-to-time and feed the soul with celebrations, gently returning to activity can help prevent an excess of imbalance.

Here are my top four tips to reversing that festive season blowout.

1. Switch the activities

If you’re lucky and don’t return to the office until after the New Year, this is a perfect time to try new activities.

Get outdoors and enjoy the Australian summer with bush walks, stand-up-paddle boarding, early morning runs, kayaking or wakeboarding. Not only do these activities expend a lot of energy, but they can also be turned into daily activities with friends and family.

2. Space out the drinking

Give your liver a rest by spacing apart your drinking. If the weeknight activities have died down, save the beer or wine for the weekend. Inevitably, the weekend barbecues, moonlight cinemas, picnics and beach goings won’t die down, so by giving your body 2-3 days in between drinks will make a difference.

3. Join an exercise group

Resolutions typically start strong, so take advantage of your motivation and sign up to a run club, intro yoga or Pilates studio, or a two-week HIIT trial.

Also, by switching up your exercises you activate new muscle groups and burn more energy doing so.

4. Sign up to a big event

The trick to making New Year resolutions is sharing them and acting on them immediately.

If fitness is an area you want to work on, sign up to a fitness event such as a fun-run, mini triathlon, ocean swim or obstacle course. Once you’ve made this decision and signed up to do so, you have committed yourself to the first step in achieving your goal.

To improve your chances of carrying through with the event, sing up with a friend.
